The Determinant as a Volume Factor, with a Sign
An interactive live film: A maps the unit cube and a ball inside it; every volume scales by |det A| and a negative determinant turns space into its mirror image. Make A a mirror that keeps volume.
Narration
A matrix A sends the unit cube, spanned by the three standard basis vectors, to the box spanned by its columns.
The determinant is the signed volume of that box. And every region scales the same way: the orange ball inside the cube becomes an ellipsoid whose volume is the absolute determinant times its old one.
The rest of the narration is in the book's Companion.
